We’re Off the Grid…Not Dead

Carruth family update! 

In April, Ryan and I moved to Saint Gabriel for the interim period before Ryan began teaching in August. The apartment we live in has been such a blessing, however it does not have internet access and poor cell phone reception for that matter, so we’ve been incommunicado for quite a while. But I have found time now, to write a little update. 

Baby Carruth— In February Ryan and I found out we are expecting our first child. I am now a good 5 months pregnant and getting quite big. I had a rough first trimester, but this second trimester has been more of a God-send! I’ve felt so much better and I’ve finally started gaining weight. Baby is growing big and starting to kick around. Most of baby’s kicks are flutters, and I’ve even felt a somersault or two.  Here lately though, baby has taken to kicking off from my hip into a flip, which makes things that much more painful for mommy. But I’ve started conditioning my response to each flip, flop and kick spin to be “thank you God that we have a healthy, strong baby and thank you for these little reminders that he or she is alive and well.” Hopefully this will get me through the last 4 months as baby grows bigger and stronger still. We have 12 more days til we find out if baby Carruth is a boy or a girl on July 15th. I am finally able to look at nursery decorations and stroller options without being completely overwhelmed. The hope is to be able to walk into a Babies R Us before baby comes in November. Fingers crossed. Although I don’t believe posterity needs to have these images, in response to popular demand, here is a photo of baby Carruth belly at 5 1\2 months. 

 

Graduation–Ryan had us all beaming at his LSU graduation this past May. With a GPA of 3.92, he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in English Literature. This was LSU’s 150th commencement exercises, the university that would become Louisiana State University held it’s first graduation ceremony in 1860. I’ve taken it for granted that the math is correct. Only weeks before graduation, Ryan was offered, and eventually accepted, a teaching position at the prestigious Catholic High School in Baton Rouge. This made his graduation day all the more exciting! He is spending his summer working at getting lessons planned and summer readings read to be prepared for his first day teaching. He has promised me one year of teaching before he sets his sights on graduate school. 

Living Quarters— We have been living in a barn in St. Gabriel, and it has been fun. Despite the lack of inter-tube connections, we’ve enjoied waking up to cows, horses and oh so many birds each day, going to sleep each night under the blessed pitch-black country sky. Oh and there is significantly less high volume rap music in the country. Country living has been revitalizing and has only encouraged our dream to live outside the city. For the time being, however, we are blessed to have found a house in Baton Rouge closer to where Ryan will be working, and where our baby will be delivered. We will hopefully be able to move out right before Ryan begins teaching, which will give us plenty of time to get settled in and set up before baby comes. We have more reason to be

 excited about moving out of the barn, we will be able to bring our beloved dog Jackie back home. One stipulation about living in the barn was that there were no animals allowed. Our wonderful friends Laura and Brandon graciously accepted to foster Jackie in Lake Charles until such a time when we found more animal-friendly living arrangements than the barn in the country (ironic? throughly). 

Cuisine–My appetite has returned! There were many stages to regaining my primal desire for food: I first could stomach only the thought of the most bland, least textural food. Then I made peace with foods of all kinds, hold the spice.  Finally, the past two weeks or so I’ve actually begun to get hungry and desire food. It has been a joyous return to eating indeed. My return to the stove has produced mostly home-style, comfort and quick fixing food the likes of Saulsbury steak, red beans and rice and tacos. Nothing glamorous or notable. However, I suspect come August (i.e. first paycheck) I’ll have access to both ingredients and internet so tune in again in a month, an eventful comeback is imminent.
